Park Clean Up Day: Saturday, May 15th

The days are getting longer. The weather is getting warmer. And the wet weather has caused flowers to bloom.

And weeds to grow. Which is why on Saturday, May 15th, starting at 9am, we'll be doing our annual park clean up. We are looking for volunteers of all ages to pull weeds, pick up trash, and spread mulch. Please come prepared with work gloves and some tools. We'll provide lunch!

And if it is a really rainy day, we'll do the work the following Saturday, May 22nd.

Spooky Stories: Thursday, Oct. 29, 6:30pm

Join us once again for a night of spooky storytelling with Irvington's favorite Edgar Allen Poe enthusiast, John Richard Luther II.

John will be reading 5 different short stores including: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Raven, Eldorado, and Dream within a Dream

Warming up for John will be Jan Riley and Kids on Guitar.

This event is suitable for all ages. Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of Irving Circle

Concert Cancelled

Due to damages suffered at the park from the August 4th storm, the upcoming August 15th concert has been cancelled. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Summer Concert Update

Saturday, July 18th, from 7pm to 9pm, Friends of Irving Circle will be presenting the second concert of the annual Summer Concert Series. Irvington's Audio Diner will be featured. There will also be concessions. The concert is free, so bring your family, a blanket and chairs, and enjoy the evening! The Friends of Irving Circle Summer Concert Series is sponsored by Central Ace Hardware, Jockamo Upper Crust Pizza, and IPL: Indianapolis Power and Light. This month's concert is also sponsored by Shirley Brothers' Irving Hill Chapel.

The August concert will be on the 15th and feature the Greater Greenwood Community Band.

Vintage Sale to Benefit Friends of Irving Circle

The Friends of Irving Circle are sponsoring a Vintage Sale on 6/20/2009 as part of the Celebrate Irvington activities. This will be held in Irving Circle Park from 9 am to 3 pm. The Friends of Irving Circle are asking for donations of “vintage items” such as antiques, furniture, glassware, books, tools, architectural pieces such as wood trim, windows, and doors, knickknacks, garden décor, plants, etc. NO CLOTHING PLEASE! This is your chance to donate all of those items you don’t use that are simply taking up space in your home and garage!!

The Friends of Irving Circle is a 501(c)3 organization and all of your donations are tax deductible! You will be provided with a signed receipt acknowledging your generosity upon request. All of the profits from the sale will go toward the upkeep of Irving Circle Park! Items can be dropped off at 308 South Audubon or the Friends can pick up your donations! Fountain Update

As you may have noticed, the fountain in Irving Circle is off. The pump broke down and has been removed for repairs. No time frame has been set. But we are hopeful that it will be up and running in time for our first concert on Saturday, June 20th. Just a reminder to help us keep people, pets, and trash out of the fountain to insure that the pump runs as long as possible. Thank you for your assistance!

The fountain in Irving Circle Park was up and running on Friday. And it is looking great! Please help us keep it running. Do not let your kids or pets in the fountain. They could damage the equipment and contribute to water loss. Plus, the surface in the fountain is slick and is a slip hazard. And there are chemicals in the water to keep mosquitoes and algae from growing. It is a fountain, not a pool!

Also, please keep trash out of the fountain. Trash can get caught in the pump system, causing the motor to burn out. If you see anyone throwing trash or sticks in the fountain, climbing into the fountain, or letting their play in the water, please ask them to refrain. If they don't, please call the Indy Parks Rangers at 327-PARK (327-7275).

Clean Up Day at Irving Circle Park

Despite the rainy days leading up to it, the park clean up day on Saturday, May 2nd turned out to be a beautiful day. Actually, the wet weather made it easier to pull weeds. Thanks to all of our volunteers who spent their Saturday helping us. As you can see from the photos and from visiting the park, the results were incredible!

Another Summer winds down

We had a great crowd on Saturday night as the Diebold Brothers treated a very large crowd to a great night of music. Thanks to all that have given time and effort to make the concert series a huge success.

If you have been paying attention to the media, you know that the financial strength of the city is not so hot and the next budget proposed by the mayor calls for major cuts at Indy Parks. According to Indy Star, the Mayor is even looking at possibly selling many of Indy's mini parks.

What does all of this mean for Irving Circle? It's hard to say right now. But Friends of Irving Circle is staying on top of it, please be assured of that. In the meantime, we are going to start our fundraising campaign for next season early. If you haven't noticed, the fountain is down again. We are not sure if it will be running again this season or not, but given the recent frequency of break-downs, we are looking to raise money to rebuild the fountain equipment and pump housing. More information on that as it comes up.

But for now, tons of thanks to everyone for their help. Continue using the park. Keep it clean. Help us maintain. Clean up after your dog. And please don't climb the fountain as you could damage it.

The water is flowing, the fountain is working!

It has been a long time coming, but the fountain is running again! Damages from last fall and difficulty finding parts for the old pump has led to a longer than anticipated shut down of the fountain. But it is working again, but we could use your help to keep it that way. Please help us keep trash from finding it's way into the fountain. There are trash cans in the park that make a much better home for refuse. Also, keeping yourself and your children out will help maintain the chemical balance of the water, which is needed to keep pump seals from deteriorating, and prevent accidental damage (not to mention prevent any harm to yourself!).

Remember, the fountain is for water only! Thank you for your help!

The King Servants Quartet to play June concert

We have confirmed our June performer for our 2008 Summer Concert Series. The King Servants Quartet will be making their debut at Irving Circle at 7pm on Saturday, June 21st. These four gentlemen will be performing classic gospel music as well as other American forms of music. We'll be selling food and beverages. So come out with your family and enjoy the enlightening sounds of the King Servants Quartet.

After the clean up...

On Saturday, over an eight hour period, around 30 volunteers brought their garden tools and helped us out as we cleaned up the park and began our re-landscaping plan.
In the beds around the fountain, the yews were removed. They had become a security problem. We are hoping to increase visibility of the fountain and decrease vandalism. In their place, hostas and boxwoods.
The outer beds also received some attention, as spireas were thinned out and some oak leaf hydrangeas were added.
All the beds received new mulch. We also mulched around the trees.
Even the young ones were helping.
Well, not all of them.
But we still had time to take a break now and then and socialize with the neighbors.
At the end of the day Saturday, all of the landscaping beds were done.
The outer beds were clean up, thinned out, weeded, and mulched.
Because of the large amount of hostas available, we split them and started planting them around the park's trees.
The beds around the fountains have large hosta gardens and are prepped for the new boxwood shrubs.

The boxwoods will be installed in two phases, with one row being planted this fall and one next fall. We are in need of additional donations to help cover it. In total, we are planning on paying around $1500 for the new plants. If you would like to donate, please email us at Irving Circle at G Mail dot com.

After the boxwoods are planted, the next phase of landscaping will include new park benches (as you can see, they are in need of replacement) and replacing deteriorated sidewalks. Any financial assistance you can give to Friends of Irving Circle, a 501(c)3 not for profit organization, will be appreciated. Contributions are tax deductible.

Thanks to all of our volunteers and especially to the four brave souls who yanked the yews out on Saturday in the pouring rain!

The band GRAAL will be making a return to Irving Circle at 7pm on Saturday, August 19th. In addition, the band Eleventh Hour will be opening at 6pm. We'll be selling food and beverages. Irving Circle Park is located in the historic neighborhood of Irvington in Indianapolis, Indiana. It can be found at the intersection of South Audubon Road and University Avenue (about 250 S. Audubon Road). The park is owned by the Consolidated City of Indianapolis and operated by Indy Parks and Recreation. Friends of Irving Circle is a not-for-profit with the dedicated mission to help maintain and improve Irving Circle Park.
