Irving Circle Park Capital Improvements

When Friends of Irving Circle was founded over 20 years ago, the charge was to care for and improve the historic Irving Circle park. That is no different today.

If you have been through the park recently, you will have noticed that the fountain is not running well. After consulting with experts, we have several recommendations on reconstructing the mechanical components of the fountain. This led to discussions about other components that we would like to see.

After months of discussions, the Friends leadership have four major goals:
  1. Reconstruct the Fountain: create infrastructure that allows for easy maintenance and operation; consider replacing the fountain with a larger, five-tier fountain; consider commissioning an artist to create a fountain that is unique to Irvington.
  2. Expand the Brick Plaza Around the Fountain: retain and repair the existing brick plaza, included all personalized bricks; expand the plaza and sell additional personalize bricks; install new sturdy benches.
  3. Replace the Sidewalks: install new sidewalks; consider widening the sidewalks; consider alternative paths.
  4. Construct a Pavilion: consider uses for concerts and other events; consider utilization by small groups (birthdays, weddings, etc.); provide a location for storage of Friends equipment

As part of this, the Friends want to remove dead and dying trees and replace with new, as well as refurbish the Washington Irving bust and provide an improved location for it.

There will be opportunities for public input. In addition to accepting comments through this website and our Facebook page, the Friends will hold a public meeting. When we have finalized our plans, we will present them to the Historic Irvington Community Council. Finally, we will submit the plans to the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission and the Indianapolis Department of Parks and Recreation.

It is our ultimate goal to improve the experience had in the park, for casual and programmed uses. We hope you agree. Below are three park layout concepts that we are considering. We appreciate any input you are willing to give. And stay tuned for more details.
